AMEN Marsha!

I believe hospitals and policy makers at hospitals, in our area and others, don't realize the harm they do when mothers who are choosing to breastfeed receive free formula upon discharge.

I also find it truly suspicious that the USA has the 2nd highest infant mortality rate (in the developed world) AND we STILL continue to give our moms free formula in most hospitals....coincidence? I think not...

  Just my thoughts for today...

All of the public hospitals in New York City are supposed to be bag free. If the reports we see on Lactnet are from any of the public hospitals then this should be reported to the health commissioner and the CEO of the hospital. Mothers who fail to receive adequate lactation care and services need to write to the hospital as well as to the NY Department of Public Health and complain. Ban the Bags has a sample letter for mothers to send to their hospital when they receive one of these bags. Lactnetters may wish to give pre-printed letters to mothers and have them mail these in when they receive a bag or experience poor breastfeeding services. We need to help mothers secure the services they need and eliminate formula peddling in hospitals. Mothers need to be complaining, not just us. Every time we see a mother who received a bag or experienced poor care is an opportunity for a letter to be sent. Maybe if the hospitals receive enough complaints they will at least wake up to
the harm they do so many of their patients.
