~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
hello fellow lactnetters,
  i have occasion to be in contact w/ a mom right now who is
presenting me w/ a new one. i have her permission to post. baby is # 7
for mom. mom's 1st baby was 80th-90th percentile, the rest were all
25th-50th percentile. she did have one set of twins in there and i r/m
her telling me they were gaining wt so poorly the dr. declared them
FTT and threatened to call cps if mom didn't begin supplementing w/
formula. mom complied and found that about 3 oz per day was enough for
them to meet an acceptable wt gain for that ped.
this current little girl is 5 mos and 3.5 wks. she appears very lively
and has met baby milestones early. she's incredibly alert, interactive
and responsive with good energy but very thin and frail-looking. mom
reports that she is a good baby that sleeps well w/ no signs of food
allergies or intolerances. i also observed none of the usual signs of
food allergies on baby. mom has a typical american diet and has
eliminated no sources of fat or otherwise. mom is not at all thin or
frail herself, dad is of a smaller build than mom but still by no
means overly thin or frail... i've seen baby nurse and seen no issues
whatsoever. baby camps out at the breast for extensive nursing
sessions, but i chalked this up to a mom w/ possibly less fat content
in her milk w/in the normal range.
mom thinks baby was 10lbs, 3 oz at 8 wks. she is now 9lbs, 6 oz at
almost 6 mos. current ped has become alarmed and has told mother she
has to supplement. again, mom is reluctant to do so and is starting
solids instead and soliciting donor milk from other moms. the family
is going through a very stressful time related to their housing being
taken from them but mom reports an abundant milk supply nonetheless.
it's a bit of a sticky situation for me, b/c this mom comes to me as a
friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend that knew of me helping their sister's
best friend through my hospital work type of thing and not someone
i've had the chance to compile info and observations on several
occasions directly myself nor see any reports/notes from the hospital
LC.
i'm mainly posting b/c what the physician says about a lack of protein
in the milk for baby's growth is really sticking in my craw. physician
did no type of analyzing of her milk - is this a valid assessment ?
has anyone else ever heard of this ? i can think of the usual suspects
in baby not gaining - esp as i have a FTT baby of my own right now -
but i just can't get over a dr. telling a mom 'it's a specific and
temporary lack of protein that helps baby grow and i went through the
same thing w/ my 5th child'. mom asked me if i've ever heard of such a
thing and i told her i've not, but i'd post here. below are mom's own
words on what the doc said - i thank you in advance for any time you
have to help me understand this ! (to avoid confusion, baby's name is
actually and legally cinderella ! :-)  mom tells me via email :
Our doctor says that my breastmilk lacks the protein that is needed in
order for Cinderella to grow :-/ She says that I am anemic and now I
am on iron supplements. She says that even though I am making enough
milk, it is just not "right" for her right now. She said that this has
happened to her and that it only took a couple of weeks before her
milk was sufficient.
This is the first I have ever heard of this!?
She said that since Cinderella is actually "ahead" of where she should
be developmentally, that she is not too worried about her. She just
said that we need to supplement with the dreaded, "f" word or use
solid foods :-( Fortunately, Cinderella has taken about 4 ounces of
sweet potatoes today. Up until now, she would just spew out whatever
we gave her. She is confident in that this will only be temporary.
My poor baby girls weighs an astounding 9'6. Poor baby :-( I have been
taking fengureek and even waking her up for feedings for the past
month. I have also been doing breast compressions. Our dr just says
that it is simply the protein content of my milk.
Poor baby girl..... I can't help but feel like I have let her down.
As for moving, we have nothing packed. This is going to be quite an
adventure. It is too overwhelming to even grasp.
