I am on Hotline duty for LLLI tonight and I have a mom with a three week
old that is losing weight. Weights are 9lb 3oz at birth, 8lb 6oz at
discharge and 8lb 3oz at three weeks. Mom has started supplementing with
formula as of yesterday as per Dr.'s orders. BM's had always been
blackish-green and very liquid until she started the formula yesterday. Now
they are a yellow color.
I suspect foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. Are there any other determining
factors for fm/hm imbalance other than poor weight gain and greenish
stools? This mom is convince that her breast milk is not good enough for
her baby, but she does not want to wean.
Mom feels like she has tons of milk.
