Hi Andrea,
We have a certificate of intent, but I doubt we will get to baby frienldy
status anytime soon, if ever. Unless they put me COMPLETELY IN CHARGE!

Re your 2 questions:
<Two issues that kept coming up were, what if a mother
requests a pacifier?>
The hospital just would not carry them; we can't prevent the parents from
buying and using them. Mothers are educated (step 3) and the education will
teach that pacifiers are known to be correlated w/ bf problems so we don't
stock them here. Better to put the baby to breast. (step 8)

<and what if a mother requests formula? >
Well if it's a mother who does not choose to breastfeed, then she either
brings in her own, or the hosp purchases it like any other item and the baby
is charged for it. Now if it is a bf mom who asks that her baby get formula,
that is a bit more tricky. In reality if the hosp is baby frienldy, then
EVERYONE (including the housekeeping staff) are supportive of bf (steps 1,
2), so in reality the mom is given great help and support, even after
discharge (step 10) and will rarely need/want formula. The babies are
rooming or bedding in (step 7), bf right away (step 4) w/o being sent to a
central nsy, so alot of these problems are eliminated. If however, a baby
NEEDS formula for a medical reason (step 6) and if donor milk not available,
it is provided by alternate route while still protecting the bf (step 5). If
the baby does not really need formula but the mom WANTS IT GIVEN, i.e. she
refuses to bf the baby, then she is counseled re the effects on baby and bf,
it is provided by alternate route and charged to the baby. Formula is not
provided free nor marketed from formula marketers, and babies are not given
artificial teats (step 9). Tell the docs this does not mean that there is no
formula anywhere in the hospital.
This is my understanding, and I hope this helps, and I think I covered all
of the 10 steps!
