Drs D. Zimmer,C. Smillie et al. the 8 mo old Brf infant I asked re: that
has been growing and developmentally normal but absolutely refuses all
solids fresh and cooked (normal not jar) foods, also rejects juices and
water but will accept mom's milk from a sipper cup and parents are
eliminating bottles without problems.
I found out that a recent CBC show iron stores to be "normal" according to
his very conservative pediatricians, I also discovered that this little guy
recently staved off hospitalization for rotavirus dehydration due to the
fact that he was breastfed also "admitted" by his peds ( he was treated
with home IV therapy ) due to all this stress mom feels she's losing her
milk but is highly motivated to build it with all the best home remedies
(sleeping with infant, frequent nursing pumping etc.)
I think I've stumbled upon some clues, they tried animal crackers
which he ate with relish BUT he was rushed to the ER with severe (but not
anaphylaxis)
alleric reaction. he has also has to suffer chronic "contact dermatitis"
they (peds) don't believe he has "allergies". Mom asked if any of this
could be due to something in her diet they (peds) said absolutely NOT. NOW
I ask, what is the most "common observed" reason kids avoid foods.......?
He usually puts foods in his mouth "mulls" over them for a short while then
it all comes back at them. Except drinks or fruity smelling foods he takes
a whiff and arches away and throws a "tantrum" until the offensive food is
taken away...He wouldn't even sip pedialyte etc. He's never had formula but
mom is FRANTIC that her pumped supply is dwindling and he's so fussy at the
breast, past week since her daily pumped supply has dropped so
precipitously. I have suggested she re broach the allergy questions with
the peds group again. I also recommended she speak with her ob re: the
possibility of a course of reglan should her efforts prove inadequate to
stimulate supply as she endevors.
My question is what other conditions would cause so many tell tale
symptoms that mimic allergies ??? When is it appropriate to work-up a baby
for atopy and what is the best approach mom could take on her own if the
peds won't offer solutions ? Elimination diet for mom, Rotation diet for
mom ? I always hate going this direction for I worry that mom or others
will burden her with further Guilt-trips. Dad is getting pretty tense and
feels if she'd QUIT the baby will come around and eat like NORMAL kids. Mom
is really very level headed, but I don't know how long her fortitude will
hold up under pressure such as this. Are there any good Parenting books
that directly address allergies yet maintain a positive analysis of the
role breastfeeding must play in the well being of this child who is doing
pretty well in spite of these roadblocks ??? hmmm......what would the Ezzo
plan suggest ?
