I also have a story from the blizzard of '77.
My daughter was also a tiny baby when that blizzard struck. My husband had to open a window, clear away the accumulated snow, and then climb out in order to dig out the front door. We were living in a big apartment complex in New Jersey at the time and one of my friends there had a baby with special needs, Downs with multiple complications. She lived in the aprtment upstairs that of my co-LLL Leader and was fully aware if the importance of human milk. However, she never even considered nursing because of her husband's *ownership* of her breasts - please don't get me started on this! (On one occaision she said that she would not mind if WE nursed her baby and did not understand why we refused.)
Anyway, her baby was on a special, very expensive formula, and her husband walked 4 miles each way through waist-deep snow (deeper in the drifts) to the one pharmacy in the area that stocked it and was open.
Did this make her husband a hero? Interesting question, isn't it?
Does this story indicate one of the advantages of breastfeeding or one of the disadvantages of formula? Which is the norm?
