Hi Jeanne,
She can try both and see what happens.
It makes sense that the baby lost weight with more bottle feedings.
Faster flow causes more trouble breathing which causes the baby to stop
eating to breathe.
Have your niece try the Haberman feeder for the bottle feedings.  And
when she is home, she can try very short, very frequent breastfeedings.
  This will give the baby time to catch his breath in between.
