I have been asked this question by a doula. She has a client who is
breastfeeding twins (sorry, can't remember their age) and was being treated
for mastitis with a 10-day course of antibiotics (the doula didn't know which
ABX). She states that shortly before the end of the treatment, the mom had
about 48 hours when her milk "smelled sour". The babies didn't reject it,
but the mom noticed it both on her breastpads or if she pumped (not after
storage, but directly from the breast). She states that it was sour "like
when the baby spits up". The sour smell then disappeared and is now fine,
but they were curious about it. Any ideas? Miriam Levitt RN, IBCLC
