Wow, I'm feeling slightly silly now for not having been able to work this one out for myself. What wonderful answers and so eloquently put. Believe me, I am constantly reminding colleagues that breastfeeding is an active relationship between two people (and one of them isn't the midwife or LC!) I am lucky enough to work in a maternity unit that has the Baby Friendly Global Award. Even though it took us years of much hard work, heart-searching before accomplishing the change in practice and arrive at where we are now, I'm well aware it's a much cosier situation than many of you have to contend with. If only I had known 20 years ago what I know now, I might have been a much better mother and have less heartache and mourning for what might have been. It was my personal experiences that set me on the road to becoming an IBCLC. I am only too aware of the practical differences between bottle feeding and breastfeeding and still grieve for my own lost opportunities every day.
