Rachel says:

In Norway it is often a couple of hours before the baby is weighed, and they
have often passed large amounts of meconium, making for an artificially low
'birth' weight, and laying the foundation for a smaller drop over the next
2-3 days.

I wonder if it is really artificially low. I think the presence of mec
before weighing leads to an artificially high initial weight. We don't want
these babies to pass any before birth (a sign of stress if they do), but we
want them to start getting rid of it as soon as possible after birth. The
volume I've seen from some kiddos has to account for several ounces of
weight loss! I still maintain that the first "official" weight should be
done at around 24 hours of age. By that time, all these variables we have
been discussing have started to level off and future comparisons will be
more valid.
