bonnie, you will like this one,

client has a baby in the nicu, and they are trying to get the feedings at two
hour intervals at the breast, instead of three hours, so that at least some of
the feeding can come from the breast. nursing staff informed that parents that
this was a bad idea, because putting a small amount of food into the baby's
stomach would cause the stomach to not digest, while putting the larger amount
in would "flip a switch" causing the stomach to know to digest.

i know it's absurd, and i checked with A Leading Authority to make sure this
was not just a ridiculously simplified explanation of some actual fact about
feeding preemies, (of course not), but i just thought y'all might want to know
- when eating anything form those food groups we have been listing, be sure
and eat lots.

they also won't let the baby eat smaller meals more often because it "takes
more calories" to digest them. duh. if it is the same amount of food, how
could it take more calories to digest if given in differing amounts?

this is the same staff telling the mother she can't have a test weigh because
it isn't accurate, and that she can't use an sns because it is too much work
for the baby and "besides, they don't work." yeah, unfortunately my previous
experience with this hospital shows that they are right on those two points,
but they don't work because of staff not being trained properly on how to do
those two things.
