I can quite appreciate your concerns, but it seems wrong to me to lump all parents who want to try solids together regardless of their reasons. This woman isn't looking to start solids because her next-door neighbour's doing it or because her mother told her babies should be on solids earlier. She's got a specific reason, based on the evidence. In fact, that same evidence suggests she needs to be careful about the types of food she gives, and other research suggests it's important to keep the amounts small at first.

I also think that taking a firm anti-solids stance with this woman could backfire, in the same way (to borrow a topic from another thread!) that firm anti-bedsharing stances backfire - it leaves you with no chance to discuss how to do things in such a way to minimise any existing risk. If you use this woman's interest in reducing diabetes risk for her child to discuss the importance of keeping the amount of solids small, increasing gradually, being careful to keep milk production up to postpone exposure to cow's milk products... chances are she'll be very receptive to all of that. If you tell her, in the face of the research, that she shouldn't start solids at all at this stage, that could lead to her losing confidence in you and getting her information from the very sources that'll encourage her to be working up to three meals a day by six months.

Best wishes,

Sarah
