Several years ago when we changed pump venders we changed to a pump for every room in the NICU and postpartum rooms. There are several (2-4)for the other units - Pediatrics, Antepartum and Womens Surgical Unit who also get newborns in times of low census and Labor and Delivery who usually do not have newborns older then two hours.
We have seen an increase with nurses initiating pumping with the moms seemingly due to not having to search for a pump and the other reasons were infection control and storage. Pumps still travel but significantly less then before. Particularly in the NICU each mom keeps the pump in the infants room and it is cleaned with the room when the infant is discharged. Storing the pumps in the rooms instead of a storage area has been significantly easier. The pumps are covered with a bag after cleaning when the rooms are cleaned and most moms do not even realize there is a pump in the room unless there is a need. We have large units so the down side is keeping track of inventory.
