At a CERP lecture on overactive letdown I attended at a LLL conference
(can't recall the speaker), she advised breaking the hard vein, then
placing the leaf over the whole breast. I received the same advice from
my own LC when I had overactive letdown, and now give that advice when
counseling moms. The lecturer said there had been a study finally
somewhere that sugggested that the active ingredient in the cabbage that
slows milk production is released from the veins of the cabbage.

From all of our experiences expressed so far, cabbage clearly has the
intended effect whether you break the vein or not, but I don't see why
one would need to remove it.

My .02.
