Rachel, hospitals don't want to change because it costs them money to
properly train staff and lower the patient to staff ratio to a level where
the staff is able to help mom breastfeed. Meaning take more than 5 minutes
to help her and advise her. It is cheaper and easier for them to give
bottles. After all, bottle feeding is so easy and no baby ever has a problem
with it.

This is said sarcastically. It amazes me that parents are given bottles and
NO ONE shows them how to properly bottle feed or advises them on the
hazards.

The other thing is that with this mother-baby separation, the staff is so
busy getting baby back and forth to nursery and the mom's room that they are
again too tied up for good patient care. Half the going back and forth is by
mother demand when she doesn't want to take care of the baby (nursery staff
are free babysitters to many parents).
