Dear friends,

it isn't about mother's seeking permission to
quit - not at the level being discussed in here. It's about mothers seeking
recognition that the burden on them is so huge, they feel utterly trapped.
So the debate is actually about what options we feel it's then appropriate
to put in their path, when the pressures are already so intolerable.

I agree, and thanks for expressing it so well.
I did ask this mom if she might need to work this issue of her past out
again with professional help, but she said no for the moment.
At the Family Wellness Center where I work we have a stupendous family
therapist, and she and I talked a lot about this mom. So, acting on one of
her suggestions, the second time I saw this mom two days ago I proposed
showing her how to hand express and not just pump, as a way to help her
reconcile with her breasts. She accepted and learned quickly and said it was
not unpleasant and she liked it better than the pump.
She called me this morning; she is feeding her little boy hand EBM and last
night she put him to the breast twice. She felt no pain, although she said
she was not "all the way comfortable". She told me she feels better about
"the whole thing" and she´ll be coming in on Monday for a visit.

Sooooo.....

Don´t we have a beautiful job?

So far in my short career as an IBCLC I can mark two moments that have made
me grow professionally: the first was when I discovered how to really
evaluate an effective latch. The second was when I passed from saying to the
moms "I´m here to help you breastfeed" to "What is your goal? I´m here to
support you and lend you my skills in achieving it." Turns out in the end
that THAT gets a lot more moms exclusively breastfeeding!!!

Warmly,
Kika
