Hi all
thought you may be interested in an update on my baby with the facial palsy.
He had actually been progressing quite well since Friday. I had a noticed a marginal improvement on Friday and a even greater one by Sunday. The LC in the breastfeeding centre today noticed a great improvement since she last saw him in the immediate postnatal period.
A lot more movement in the lips and tongue. Can purse his lips now. Lips not as 'twisted' or 'contorted' looking. Lateralizes tongue and extends tongue to gum margin, although does not hold it there. The speech therapist thought originally, that if he had his tongue tie snipped he may loose stability. I can understand where she is coming from, however snipping may also allow him to extend the tongue more . We will wait and see.
Suck still seems disorganised to some extent but a great improvement from what it was.
Feeds well with teat. Does not breastfeed well yet though. He just sits there and does nothing. My guess is that he is accustomed to the teat now so that is something we will have to work with.
Will see them next Monday and will (again) suggest a shield as a 'stepping stone' back to the breast, all going well. One step at a time.
Seen by consultant who agrees this most likely is neurological damage, especially as it has improved so quickly.

Thank you all (and especially Catherine ;-) ), for your suggestions

Regards
Karen Clements
