In my earlier post I expressed concern about telling moms that breastfeeding
will be pain-free. I see others have expressed what I was trying to say.
That is that in the early days the nipples may be tender, due to either
negative pressure, or the nipple being brought back far into an inexperienced
baby's mouth. While saying that I don't want to give the impression that
high levels of pain are normal. In that case obviously something is going
on. When asked about the pain level, some moms give a level of 1-2 on a pain
scale of 1-10. This does not strike me as a problem, as long as the mom
doesn't feel it is a problem. I guess I'm saying that intial tenderness is
one thing, and pain is an entirely different issue.
I had a similar experience to what someone else posted. I never experienced
any tenderness or discomfort that I can recall with my first 3. With my
fourth child however, I had tenderness that lasted a few days. And I had my
first 3 before we understood position and latch were responsible for most
nipple discomfort. Here I was being so careful with positioning with my 4th.
Go figure. :) Sue
