In my last post, I forgot to mention this, on the subject of mother -
infant separation. Isabella Fox, Ph.D, wrote a book, "Being There." It
has a wonderful section on separation and grief from the infants
perspective. What we as adults, forget, is that the infant has no
concept of individual (he/she and mother are the one and the same),
time, and going away (to work, to shop, on a trip, etc.) does not mean
gone forever. Imagine, if you will, how you would feel, if unexpectedly,
in the flash of an instant you lost your (arm, leg, eyesight, hearing,
whatever) without knowing, if the use of it would ever return. Your
shock and grief would be profound. Why then is it so hard for mothers
and fathers to comprehend the same feelings, worse really because there
is no way to explain the reality, happens to an infant when separated
from his/her mother? Also Brenda Hunter, Ph.D. also wrote a good book,
filled with separation research, entittled "Home By Choice."
