Thank you Nikki for your post. I found myself in this exact scenario just
about 14 hours ago. I had a small and slightly early baby who was tired and
would absolutely not be coaxed to the breast. She was sleepy and even when
skin-to-skin, she wanted nothing more than to snuggle in with her mother and
sleep soundly. While everyone else was saying, "She needs to supplement", I
disagreed. I then spent forty minutes with this mother helping her to hand
express her milk. Well, truthfully, I did it all myself. She was still on
some heavy duty medications and not feeling well at all. I worked with her
and did a lot of breast massage and I got my 1cc syringe ready. To my joy,
I had to leave the room to retrieve a larger syringe. We were able to
express (at just about 24 hours post c-section) 8cc of colostrum and
finger/syringe feed it to her baby. The baby then slept solidly for 3 hours
and then woke up, was alert and latched on beautifully. Her mother was so
happy that we didn't push the formula and she was in awe, seeing those
precious drops of milk her breasts were able to make. It really was a
beautiful experience!! Some of the other nurses thought I was a little
looney, but I'm hoping that slowly, attitudes can be changed! (I'm new
there.)
