I have read the postings about babies who delay intake of solids as my third
child did not eat solids until after his first birthday. I offered solids
to him on a regular basis after six months but every time he tried to eat
them, he gagged. It would seem that the food got to the back of his tongue
and then he did not know what to do with it. He was therfore fully
breastfeed until 12+months, and in the 95th%tile. Now, at age 3and a
half, we have had this child evaluated for speech delay. It seems that he
has significant delays due to poor oral/motor development. (He can't make
his mouth form the sounds). I now see a correlation between this and the
delay of solids--the only other significant delay in his history besides
speech. I am very glad that this child had the benefit of bf--he really
needed the oral motor stimulation that comes from bf. It seems to me that
sometimes there are very real reasons for a baby's behavior that may not be
obvious until a future time.
