Gonneke,
Thank you so much for your explanation. It was wonderful.
I do use finger feeding for suck training and assessment but I find that
contrary to what you say, ( The finger and the bottle teat both are firm,
non pliable objects and for some babies it will make them the same, while
they cannot handle a firm mass in their mouth easily). the bottle teat is
pliable unlike the finger and this is where we are having problems. Also,
the flow of the milk seems very fast to me, except when we hold the milk
well below the baby and (this is where we may need more teaching done). For
some babies, I have found the slow flow NUK nipple(on a rare occasion) to
work well as baby learns to breastfeed, they learn to work "hard" yet don't
get frustrated when the milk doesn't spill right out. I also have a problem
sending moms home finger feeding as I am not sure how clean their situation
is, and often times the finder feeding gets many comments from "well
meaning" friends and relatives. I guess that every situation is unique and
that we must use our common sense to protect, promote and support
breastfeeding. Thanks again.
Marilyn
