If her amalgam filling has been breaking down, baby (and she) has already
been getting some mercury--but continued breastfeeding is still preferred.
The removal of the filling will give him some, but if the tooth is filled
with a composite filling instead of a mercury one, then he will be
absorbing less after the work is done.

Some dentists take time to protect the patient from exposure to the mercury
when she/he is removing an amalgam filling. The mother could ask for this
consideration.

There is no need to refrain from feeding her baby for this
procedure(regardless of how it is done), either before or after. A nine
month old baby needs his mother's milk from her breast and her milk is fine
for him. No one knows how the mother's body handles mercury or how a baby
who is drinking breastmilk handles any toxins that are ingested.
