i am still dealing w/ the case of the 6 mo baby who is 9 lbs. mom is
reluctant to come for a professional evaluation by the hosp LC b/c she
insists her dr. told her her milk is just temporarily missing a
protein that helps baby grow, possibly due in part to mom being
anemic. it turns out said dr. never even tested mom for anemia - but
is treating her for it nonetheless ! she also told mom to supplement
bb and start solids - esp sweet potato ! never even looked at baby's
mouth or watched them nurse. this dr. is a DO (and told mom she was a
LLLL for 20 yrs. ~ i am astounded and very highly doubtful). again and
again i am banging my head against the wall w/ this mom and starving
baby b/c 'my doctor says it's no big deal, just give her sweet
potato!' and i'm 'just' a bfing volunteer.

 Hi Jacqui,

I'd suggest getting mom's written permission to send info to her Dr. and to discuss this situation with her Dr. You may find that mom is not being completely accurate about what her Dr. told her. This may be what the mom wants to have heard, not what the Dr actually said. Either way, I'd insist on open communication between the 3 of you. If mom were to tie my hands, by refusing to let me discuss this with her Dr., I'd not see her at that point. I might seek other avenues at that point. Let us know how this turns out for everyone. It sounds like a wonderful learning opportunity.
