Being overcontrolling of the wife's access to money is a form of spousal
abuse.  Many families in my community have very tight budgets, but they
use strategies to pay for needed services to breastfeed, including
negotiating reduced fees, price shopping for pumps, prioritizing
equipment rentals or purchases, and asking good questions before
spending money.  It's usually a danger sign when the husband won't "let"
the wife spend money on something so important to her and their baby.
    Financial priorities are pretty evident when you go to someone's
home.  I've been in the homes of young couples who have nothing but a
bed and a kitchen table and chairs, yet did not blink at my fee; and
conversely have seen clients who cried poverty yet had shelves full of
commercial video tapes (before the days of DVD) and a home theatre
system that cost more than my apartment!
