OB in1973 was pretty grim, too. When I had my first child, I labored with
another poor soul in a small room where husbands were not allowed. After
laboring for 24 hours, I was put to sleep for a C section. And how could I
forget my breastfeeding experience in the hospital?!  Beginning the next
DAY, two nurses, one with the baby, the other with a stainless steel tray
holding containers of alcohol, distilled water and cotton balls (to cleanse
my breasts) would trudge down the hall every FOUR hours (with a baby that
had been formula fed in between and pacified) for the feedings.  Of course,
the more I heard ("you don't want to do THAT, do you?) the more I was
determined. (Btw, that child's wife is now expecting baby # 2 in a few days
and will be BF of course.)  Slowly but surely, things do get better...
