[international aid student buys cows for HIV-positive moms in Africa - for
cow milk to be used in lieu of formula or breastmilk]

A student of Africa who is familiar with the humanitarian community, Laura
Merriman expected challenges when she arrived last month in Rwanda for an
internship at an HIV/AIDS nonprofit organization. Then she met Marie.

Marie, a 4-month-old baby, can't talk, but Merriman quickly learned her
story and decided to try to change its ending. Marie's HIV-infected mother,
too poor to buy formula or animal milk, was breast-feeding the infant,
putting her at substantial risk for contracting the virus, with the
likelihood rising once she reached 6 months.

So Merriman, a 21-year-old Yale senior, decided to get a cow to save Marie
and other babies.

"When I told [Marie's mother], she and the other women [in the village] were
overjoyed and said they will pray for this to happen," Merriman recently
wrote in a letter to friends and family back home in Connecticut, asking
them to donate the few hundred dollars needed to buy a cow. "The cow would
also be an investment, as the [calves] it produces can be used to feed other
infants in the same situation."
