Here also, it is recommanded to give regularly Vik to breastfed infants, as
long as they are exclusively breastfed. It is exact that the infants who get
hemorrhagic disease of the newborn are almots always breastfed infants.
Most of these infants have an hepatic trouble, or are premature, or have a
problem making them having insufficient stock or inability to use it with
efficiency. But the subject is very controversial. You can read a very
intersting article :
Treating all babies with vitamin K : an unnatural policy ? J Slattery. Br J
Obstetr Gynaecol 1996; 103: 400-1.
Vit K pass very well in milk. Possible to give it to the mother (as Vit D).

The Vit K content in the milk is dependent on Mom's diet, so full vegans are
at the highest
risk. The IM injection at birth prevents the problem. If parents refuse IM
Vit K, the baby should get 2 mg po at birth and q 1 month X 2-3.
Almost no Vit K is transmitted via the placenta. No-one understands why
nature would allow this to happen to a fully breastfed infant. Any ideas
Kathy?
