Katherine,
This discussion is making me want to continue my research... I don't
think I even have references for some of this. I'm sure you can
understand that when someone like me reads something like "mothers of
multiples tend to be taller than mothers of singletons", it sticks in
her mind, even if it has nothing to do with an article on supporting
mothers who are breastfeeding twins...
So, without the references, what I remember is:
1) mothers of multiples are taller than mothers of singletons, but not
heavier (pre-pregnancy, that is :-)
2) fraternal twins are hereditary, through the mother's side, and it is
assumed that the tendency to release two eggs is hereditary
3) mothers of fraternal twins reach menopause earlier than others. (I
tricked my memory into retaining this by thinking that I was using up my
eggs more quickly than others, but that doesn't make real sense, just
figurative sense.)
4) I am really not sure about whether twins tend to be conceived earlier
in the cycle than singletons... I remember something to that effect.
Looks like it is back to the library for me... I spent a lovely
afternoon in the UNB library's nursing section -- without meeting a
single nursing mother LOL.
Jo-Anne
