their own body functions, is completely new. 

I usually warn parents of this, as they will call with: the baby has pain
with stooling, or is constipated - when they see the baby behave in this
way.

I tell them the baby is now "wearing a new space-suit" and "living in a new
planet with gravity" and the newborn needs to learn how to "run" all the
new equipment (bowels) and figure out the timing (when is the best time to
push it out).  They also are not using gravity to the maximum yet - but I
find that if we sit the baby up (which upset moms in Puerto Rico who were
told this was bad for the spine), the anus opens easier and babies
"perform" better.
