You wrote "She accepts breastmilk from a bottle quite contentedly, but Mom
would like baby to accept her breast again. I'd suggested cup feeding and
Mom says baby likes it, but still won't take the breast."

Here's an example of what I was saying in an earlier post that some babies
begin to refuse the breast once they start taking regular bottles, even if
ebm is in the bottles. I think this is especially true if mother's own
supply is dwindling for whatever reason. Maybe she's not expressing as much
as she needs to. So I think this is a case of 'flow preference' or that baby
prefers a good flow of milk when hungry. Since baby takes a cup happily, I'd
suggest totally discontinuing bottles and pacifiers in favor of breast and
cup, and working hard on increasing supply since baby is not doing it for
her. Utilize the strategies that often work for nursing strikes.

On a personal note, this situation strikes an unhappy chord for me, as my
first baby who is 13 now, 'weaned' at around 9.5 months, due to my total
ignorance and careless use of free formula bottles without compensating by
expressing. Also advice about not needing to feed the baby so much at nite.
This quickly led to a diminished supply, a nursing strike (and again I did
not express, even though I kept offering the breast for days) which quickly
led to premature weaning. BTW I thought bf for 9 months was an extremely
long time, it was in my circle. So a word to the wise, you might want to ask
about bf practices, scheduling, night feeds, co-sleeping, pacifier use,
formula use etc. Take nothing for granted.
p.s. I went on, 5 yrs later, to bf exclusively, w/o ever using formula and
my dtr weaned around age 5 or 6, it's a blur. Ah Redemption! Yet still I
mourn the loss of the full nursing relationship w/ my son.
