I am still about 10 digests behind in reading so this may be irrelevant now.
Sharon Knorr sent her good suggestions for positions which can help clear
plugged ducts.
I have had a position for relieving plugged ducts named after me and I live
in constant fear that the true inventor (patent holder?) will appear at my
door some day with police and warrants, ready to take me off to copyright
court for pirating someone else's method. I haven't seen it described in
any books but the Norwegian one in which it is called 'Rachel's trick' but I
think there is a drawing of it in a WHO publication, because such a drawing
has been reproduced in a newer Norwegian book with no explanatory text about
its purpose and without my name.
But now I will just be brave and describe the position. I found it myself
when I had plugged ducts in the early 1980's and have shared it with
countless others throughout the years. It often works, so I continue to
recommend it, for plugged ducts in the upper outer quadrant of the breast.
And about a week ago, I learned it is included, with my name, in a Swedish
pocket guide to BF help which has just been published, for NICU nurses to
use at work.

Here's my trick, and I am sure many of you will recognize a position you
have BF in without ever knowing it was a trick at all, as co-sleepers
everywhere probably use it several times a night:
Mother lies on one side, with the problem breast UP. Baby lies on side next
to mother. Mother rolls over until breast reaches down to baby, and feeds
in this position. As with the all fours position described by Sharon, this
position lets the breast hang free, and straightens out ducts which may get
'kinked' or pressed on in many upright positions, or in side-lying if the
affected breast is nearest the mattress.
If desired, once milk is flowing, mother can apply gentle pressure over the
affected area with the flat of her hand to help that particular area to
drain. It isn't always even necessary.

I would like to know if this position has been described in the literature
previously. I have never seen it myself, but I certainly didn't devise it
specially in order to have an original BF position. It was purely
incidental. If it does 'belong' to someone I would like to give them
credit.
