Donna,

You wrote "I need to give this mom of a one month old nursling reassurance
that this drug is safe for her to take ( 250 mg twice a day - total 500 mg)
while nursing. Does anyone have any experience with this drug (used for
epileptic seisures)? She is concerned about the liver aspects."

Is it AAP approved? In my experience, AAP approval is not given lightly, so
*I* am fairly reassured when it is AAP approved. Is mother fully
breastfeeding or partial breastfeeding? Is the infant healthy and thriving?
In my opinion, the role of the LC is *not* to give her reassurance that this
drug is safe for her/ baby, but to give her information from reliable
sources so that she can make an informed decision. You might explain what
AAP approval is, what ratings are used L1-L5, and the known risks of
formula. And there is nothing wrong with checking the infant's drug level,
platelet count, and liver enzymes periodically.
