Hi Steph,
My babies always had very sweet smelling breath, as do other bf babies, so
this sounds normal. Did midwife notice anything unusual?
If the baby was acting sick or not thriving, I would want to investigate
further. If all is otherwise well, mom can continue to observe and report
any concerning s/s. I NEVER dismiss something that concerns the mother. I
usually say that the baby appears normal, the s/s the mother is reporting
sounds normal or a normal variant, but I ask the parents to continue to
observe and report any concerning s/s. I will also give some examples of
things that would indicate baby is sick. When babies have some sort of
metabolic problem, or genetic problem, sometimes signs are subtle at first,
esp. if bf, and the mother is the 24/7 observer, so I never ignore of
dismiss what she is worrying about.
