Had an interesting conversation with a client yesterday. This mom has been
struggling with perceived vs. actual low supply. Started off with a baby who
lost a lot of weight initially and had to supplement at first. Gradually
weaning off formula until family member became ill with brain tumor. Mom
traveling back and forth to hospital with baby greater than 2 hours/day. Mom
questioning supply. Baby has gained over 1 oz per day throughout. Mom on my
advice has been following baby's schedule, giving breast only for a couple
weeks untilt his event. She suspected her supply low because of "stress".
Opted to pump one day and give baby all formula "just to see". Baby took
21.5 oz of formula, mom pumped 20 oz. She is encouraged. The interesting
thing is this baby weighs over 10 lbs. according to all the books, this baby
should not be growing on 20 oz/day (if this was a typical day). Makes you
wonder what the "real" feeding needs are. I advised mom to stop pumping just
feed and enjoy her baby now she's home again. Another example of the rampant
belief that the human is incapable without the assistance of technology and
where an early problem (and screwed up M.D. scales) can really undermine a
mom's confidence!
