>hi everyone - I knew ahead of time that gentian violet was going to be
really >messy - but this is CRAZY! We painted the mom's nipples and areola
- the baby >latched - and now it's on the tip of his nose, and on his chin,
and making >about a 1 inch circle of purple all around his lips! Does
anything take this >off his face? Mom his concerned his Christening is in
10 days. HELP!

Within 2 days after finishing the treatment, the purple will be gone from
his face. The tongue will take a little longer.

Rubbing alcohol will remove it from his face, but I don't recommend it
because of irritation. One mother felt that she needed to make baby
presentable to the relatives so she got the GV off with alcohol, then
spread lanolin on it. Her baby didn't seem to suffer from the "wash."

The "clown face" is usual, as is the spread to nose and chin.

Some people recommend applying lanolin to the face before feeding to lessen
the purple strength.

At least this baby didn't do what another one did. The GV was applied to
his mouth and while everyone was checking him out he sneezed, applying
little purple dots over everyone.

As an aside, anything that gets stained and that can't be bleached can be
soaked in rubbing alcohol over night, removing the purple.

Pat Gima, who has purple on her lab coat from holding a purple-faced baby
today.
