Hi all,

Being incredibly behind with Lactnet-posts, I have given myself a daily
quotum of about 50 posts, that way working down on some 1800 unread postings
(I'm at about 1350 now! hahaha).
I came across a posting from Winnie (see below) and although I have not yet
read the new IBLCE-requirements closely enough to know them by heart, to me
it seems pretty clear that they are not taking the direction that Winnie
promotes. More and more medical knowledge is entering the scene and it is
getting harder and harder for volunteers to join the lc-ranks. As Karleen
has often said: the profession seems to be medicalizing rapidly. I recently
wrote a review from 'The Revolutionaires Wore Pearls', published for the
occasion of the 50th LLL-anniversary. I am not confident that these roots
will be duly honoured, considering the developments at hand.
Who gets to decide the direction for our profession? Who has been asked for
input with regard to the new requirements? And how and with what influence
can worries and/or comments be voiced...?
I just read a bit more and not all is fully clear, but those who can sit the
exam in 2011 and do not pass, have to meet the new requirements, which might
mean: no chance whatsoever!
In a couple of years, this may cause a big shift and I'm really not sure
that we won't lose a valuable part of what got the profession started in the
first place...

Warmly,

Marianne Vanderveen IBCLC, Netherlands

As a profession, we need to strive to have our title recognized as a
free-standing one. This is something that needs to be worked on by the
IBLCE, ILCA and affiliates such as USLCA (who can deal with the different
national/local issues).
