You might be interested in this little segment of information I received
from a pediatrician who nursed her own children for about 3 years each.

"I enjoyed reading your chapter very much. I shake my head recollecting my
daughter's first visit to the dentist. She had two cavities in her front
incisors and I was so horrified that I immediately told the dentist that my
daughter was still nursing frequently. My daughter is so wonderful and so
conscientious that, after the dentist talked to her about stopping, she did
not ever take to the breast again. Admittedly, I was tiring of nursing her
so
frequently, but I regret my cooperation with the dentist.
It turns out that my daughter has great susceptibility to cavities. It
had nothing to do with nursing. And the worst part, of course, was the
sudden onset of recurrent ear infections at the age of three. She had never
had an ear infection prior to that. So there we go. I couldn't agree more
with your comments about dentists and how wrong their recommendations are,
affecting young nursing children's psychological well-being very
negatively."
