POSITION TITLE:                         Lactation Consultant

POSITION PURPOSE

This position is accountable for the provision of adequate breastfeeding
education and safe and effective breastfeeding management to the
infant-mother dyad throughout the continuum from prenatal care to weaning
age of the infant.

NATURE AND SCOPE

This position functions under the supervision of the Director of the
Women's Health Center.

Lactation Rounds

The Lactation Consultant makes a needs determination of her inpatient
population, including visual and physical assessments of mother and infant
and applicability of immediate and past patient histories for both mother
and infant to determine=8A
*       adequacy of feedings;
*       integrity and functionality of mother's breasts, including health
and structure of nipple and breast tissue;
*       ability of infant to breastfeed;
*       level of knowledge and experience of mother;
*       familial history regarding atopic disease and food tolerances if
supplementation is to be recommended;
*       recognition of any special needs or factors that may have an impact
on breastfeeding.

Outpatient Consultations
Lactation consultant conducts telephone consultations and, where necessary,
schedules outpatient visits to the lactation clinic to correct any
deficiencies in breastfeeding management and to correct any underlying
causes of breastfeeding failure or nipple damage.  Breast health may be
assessed in terms of functional disorders.  Infant suck pattern may be
assessed and interventions conducted.

Outreach
Lactation consultant must be prepared to represent Logan Regional
Hospital's Lactation Clinic as a lecturer on lactation in the community.

Qualifications
Lactation consultant must undergo and pass certification as a lactation
educator, specialist, or consultant within one year of hire and become an
Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant within two years of
hire.  Lactation consultant must acquire 12 continuing education credit
hours specific to lactation each year.
