I'm not an expert on various slings, but from my experience, its really
important to have some good instructions/pictures on how to put them on, use
them, etc. Especially in our culture where people may never have seen one
used before, they can feel awkward and unsafe at first, until confidence
builds.

Here's some links to help:

And some more links: (more than you'll ever read through!)

And some tips:
The best tip I've heard is wearing the baby at the same height that you'd
carry the baby - most people put the baby in too low.

My tip - once you get baby in securely the first time - start walking. If
you just stand there, the baby might get fussy. Until the baby and you get
used to the idea, its best to be all ready for a walk, stick baby in, then
start walking. Later baby will be used to sling, and won't mind just
"hanging out". You'll soon get used to using one hand to secure and steady
baby when you lean forward, etc.

(who is about 0 for 6 at attempts to get my neighborhood new moms to use a
sling, despite loaning them one and offering to help them learn to use it.
The latest this week, flat out told me she'll never use it. We were both
camping at the lake, and it looked like she preferred to push her extremely
large double stroller (with 2 year old son in it) while carrying her newborn
in her arms, in a blanket, over the rough uneven ground! My only conclusion
is that most moms would rather "be like everyone else" that try something
different, since all the other moms have these huge expensive strollers,
too. I guess no one dares join me here, way out in left field, with my baby
in a $30 sling, instead of a $400 stroller.)
