I use something like this with newborns all the time. It's similar to a trick I
learned at a Kitty Franz workshop a long time ago. She would put a baby in a
blanket, then have two adults each hold two corners and swing the baby for a
few minutes - it really helped them relax and reorganize, then they'd go to the
breast.
In a hospital setting I was a little uncomfortable with this - I had visions of
someone losing their grip on their corner! So I started swinging them much as
Sanna-Mari describes: one hand under the head, one under the butt. Over the
years, I've found that some babies are "swingers" and some are "bouncers,"
but most calm down very quickly, especially with a soft shhh shhh in their ear,
and go to the breast readily afterwards. It works well with those kids who
arch away from the breast, get stiff all over and scream like nobody's
business. Deb, IBCLC in the "cold Kentucky rain!"
