Jamelle,
We really don't have flaming on Lactnet so no need to worry about that.
Personally, I think that hospitals really *need* to have those cosleeper beds for new mums and babies- hospital beds are too narrow IMO for cosleeping. And yes, an exhausted mum needs someone to watch her with her baby, it is unfortunate that midwives in hospital are often too busy to be able to sit with mums for extended periods of time.

I know there is probably going to be backlash against this post, but here goes. Let me preface this by saying that I think sleeping with one's baby is safe, falling asleep while breastfeeding is a great way for moms to get much needed sleep, etc.
However, a mother who has been awake for over 24 hours is not in a physiologically normal state. She is impaired; just like she would be impaired if she drank alcohol, took strong cold medicine, or had drugs in the hospital for pain.S he is more impaired that the usual mother of a newborn with interrupted sleep. (In addition, she had just given birth)

I am not saying this midwife 'deserves' to be sued, and of course there could be circumstances not reported in this article. But people must be aware that there are guidelines that outline safe co-sleeping, and an impaired mother is one of those things that makes co-sleeping unsafe.

Flame away if you must!
