If any of you saw the 20/20 program where he was guiding parents of a
sobbing baby in a crib in a closed room you will know that his abusive
recommendations were not misconstrued. Nor wasl there any suggestion of
compassion. In fact he said that mothers are too soft and should be sent
away for a weekend while Dad takes over to break the bad habits that were
in place.

20/20 had a firm policy of not having rebuttal programs but made an
exception when they received more negative mail than they had ever
received--many from pediatricians who labeled the practices "child abuse."

I can't remember what year the program was on but I will never forget the
footage of that little boy crying until he collapsed in heap over his
stuffed rabbit.

Did others of you see the program?

The rebuttal program had Dr William Sears and a different family, with a
delightfully articulate, little 3-year-old girl.

Dr Ferber probably thinks that those of us who were around then have gone
to other things and do not remember the details of his book's
recommendations and the TV program.

He may have changed his mind but we did not misinterpret what he originally
said.
