Tammy,
Because the baby is exhibiting symptoms that MAY be attributed to
cocaine exposure, the appropriate course of action, in my opinion, is to
get the baby tested. This is a serious allegation which could easily
result in the removal of the baby from mom by Child Protective
Services. This is a very drastic and traumatic course of action, if, in
fact, there are only suspicions about cocaine exposure, and not factual
data. Be very sure that when reporting your findings to the doctor and
requesting testing, you use precise observations, not opinions. Doing
otherwise would be a grave disservice to the mother and baby.

Congratulations on your critical thinking and problem solving, I'm sure
that you will be a very good nurse.
