Hello Lactnetters,
An aquaintance of mine has been struggling with a severe infection that
seems to have occurred on the heels of treatment for mastitis a month
ago, then a yeast infection due to antibiotics for the mastitis. While
everything seemed to be clearing up, her right nipple became very sore
and things took a turn for the worst when her 11 month old nursling bit
that nipple. The next day Mom spiked a temp of 104, with body aches, a
red streaked breast and a nipple that felt as if it was " touched by a
flame".
She has taken Augmentin x3days and has massaged, soaked and pumped. Pus
has been draining from that nipple after salt/hot water soaks. She
returned to her Dr. and was placed on 500mg Keflex 4xday and told she
had an abcess but mostly with nipple involvement, probably staph or strep
from her baby's mouth. Her nipple is has darkenend and there are numerous
blisters that burst spontaneously and drain. She is massaging and pumping
to keep the breast empty. Her Dr. recommended weaning saying she couldn't
nurse on this side at all anymore or the infection would just keep coming
back. The next step is surgery which Mom really doesn't want. She is
interested in herbal remedies or ANYTHING that might help.
I am so new at this IBCLC that I didn't dare go this one alone :-)
Thanks in advance for your help.
