An actor playing a Colonial lawyer during our recent visit to Williamsburg
had this to say about professionals.  Don't know if it was the actor's
theory, the Colonial lawyer's, or fact:

A "professional" (lawyer, doctor, clergy, teacher)  is distinguished from
other craftsmen by the fact that he *professes* to want to do himself out
of his job, though of course he really doesn't.  A lawyer prospers when
people can't settle their own disputes, and a doctor makes money off
illness, not health.  A clergyman may want to see the second coming... but
not tomorrow.  And a teacher thrives on ignorance.  Lactation consultants
consider themselves professionals.  Something to think about...
