I have been a WIC peer counselor for almost four years. I get great
rewards from knowing that when I persuade a mom to nurse their child, that
baby can get the same miracles physically and emotionally as the child who
is born to an affluent family who is also breastfeeding.

Most of our clients smoke so that baby is already at higher risk for ear
infections, upper resp. infections, and even SIDS. Think of the money that
the government can save on that family when she breastfeeds that baby.
Both WIC and Medicaid can save a staggering amount. All three of my
children have qualified for WIC and I know that the fact that my last two
never had a single drop of formula saved someone a pretty penny.

I found out last week that I received a scholarship to further my Lactation
training. It will pay for part of my tuition so that I can take a distance
learning couse through BCS. I know that there will be many more
requirements since I didn't attend college, but I great faith that someday
you will be reading entries from me signed, Shawn Callahan IBCLC.

I have learned so much more than I ever thought possible from being on
LACTNET. It is such a blessing to network with so many people who are so
sincere and self sacrificing. You have been such an encouragement to
me(typing away with a big smile on my face) here in Pierceton, Indiana.
