I felt exactly the same way.  Would it have not been safer to strap 
those babies to their mothers, "kangaroo mother care" style?  In other 
countries that don't have isolets and lots of other equipment, and use 
this to give babies the best chance of survival.  MY own choice would 
have been to do this and either stayed with my baby in the hospital, or 
tried my chances.  I couldn't have left my baby there, I'm sure many of 
those mothers made a heart wrenching decision.  I hope they all return 
safely.
