I am posting for Dr. Virginia Thorley on the references for Aimee's case of a mother with severe damage at the base of the nipple:

<Below are the citations on mothers’ flinching response to anticipated pain, which then sabotages the latch at the last moment. The Breastfeeding Review article has more detail.

Thorley V. Latch and the fear response: overcoming an obstacle to successful breastfeeding. Breastfeeding Rev 2005; 13(1):9-11.

Thorley V. Mothers’ behavior that undermines breastfeeding latch: the fear response. (letter) J Hum Lact 2004;21(3):243-244.

Best wishes
Virginia
