Thanks, Gonneke, for reminding us about the "I" in IBLCE and ILCA.

Many mothers have expressed anger at *not* being given accurate information
in helping them make a decision. Are we now to say, "sorry I can't share
relevant information with you because it may contradict what you have
already been told?" I am wondering how I could possibly live with myself if
I have to withhold information that could help parents make an informed
decision.

I have a passion for dispelling myths. Have just returned from a 2-hour
home consult. Mom was told to drink more water, keep baby on the breast
long enough to get past the first watery milk. She was told she did not
have enough milk (the maths, history, observation and assessment do not
support this). If I had practised within the new SoP I would not have been
able to assist this mother. In fact I would in all good conscience not have
been able to charge her a professional fee. Meaning I would not be able to
put bread on my table.

I happen to be an RN&M, but the most exciting part of being an IBCLC is
being able to draw on the various backgrounds of IBCLCs around the world.
Some of the very best IBCLCs I know have no medical background. Most of
what I know about bf is *not* from being a nurse and midwife! I have been
fortunate to teach semi-illiterate community workers and all categories of
health professionals. The ones scoring the lowest marks on pretests are
usually RNs!
